Last Friday (8/31/13), the Emmaus Lady Eagles would need to drive many miles to reach their first opponent, Central Christian College of the Bible, in Moberly, Missouri. "You could feel the intensity in the locker room before the game. New coach, new players, and new positions made everyone wonder what the Lady Eagles were made of this year," said Coach Strautmann.
This question was quickly answered as the Lady Eagles came out strong, controlling most of the first set. However, Central finished with a few good runs to close out the set (21-25). Our ladies started the second and third set in a similar fashion but this time were able to close them out with some smart play and hustle (25-19, 26-24). "I was very impressed with the girl’s perseverance in these two games, as it could easily have gone the other way had they not fought so hard," said Coach Strautmann. The Saints would not go away though, as the Lady Eagles lost a close one (24-26) in the fourth set to push the match to the fifth and final set. It is never easy going into the last set (only 15 points) without momentum. The ladies started behind and it was looking pretty dire. However, the girls pulled together and completely turned the set around to came out on top! (15-11).
Coach Strautmann had this to say after the match: "In the fifth set, it is so difficult to come from behind and win, but the girls did exactly that and finished strong. I am so proud of them and what they have already accomplished together."
